2020 Presentation Event

Dec. 1, 2020

Bill 7 Award held another successful, albeit different, scholarship presentation event on November 2, 2020. Over 200 people attended an exciting virtual event for our 20 very deserving scholarship recipients.

We heard many inspiring stories as they showed their appreciation for the support they received from us in pursuing their studies. Thanks to our generous donors, Bill 7 Award was able to present a second continuing scholarship to a student who will be entitled to receive their scholarship each year for up to 4 years as they complete their degree.  Even better, we announced that we are increasing the amount of each scholarship presented to $3,500!

We also had a record-breaking silent auction, and pledges to win the raffle for an Apple Watch, that raised a total of over $7,000! Thank you to everyone who participated in the silent auction and pledged to win the Apple Watch and thanks to all of our wonderful donors and supporters.

We would also like to take the opportunity to thank our event sponsors – IBM Canada, Manulife and EY. It is through their generous support that we’re able to hold this special event and recognize our scholarship recipients.

The online application for the 2021 scholarships will open in April 2021…stay tuned for more information. We expect to award at least 18 scholarships of $3,500 each this year!

2019 Presentation Event

Nov. 7, 2019

November 7, 2019 marked another wonderful Bill 7 Award Presentation at the 519 Community Centre.

A record group of almost 150 comprised of recipients, guests, donors, sponsors and supporters witnessed a diverse group of impressive student recipients receiving Bill 7 Award scholarships.  The bravery, authenticity and dedication of the students, and hearing of the challenges they have overcome, always leaves a memorable impact on attendees.

At the event, thanks to increased support from our generous donors, we were pleased to announce our first ever continuing Bill 7 Award scholarship, which was awarded to recipient Adryan Korzen (currently in 1st year Medical Science at Western) who will be eligible to receive a Bill 7 Award scholarship each year until he completes his undergraduate program.  In addition to the new continuing scholarship, we were also to present 15 scholarships in the amount of $3,000.   You will recall due to donor support we increased each scholarship to $3,000 each compared to $2,500 in recent prior years.

We also would especially like to thank our event sponsors - IBM Canada, EY and Manulife Financial - who through their generous support enable us to hold this very special event to recognize the 16 very deserving LGBTQ students who were scholarship recipients.

2018 Presentation Event

Nov. 8, 2018

We held another hugely successful Bill 7 Award Presentation on Thursday November 8, 2018 at the 519 Community Centre.

We heard powerful stories from and celebrated our amazing student recipients.  We also announced a very significant donation by RBC Foundation and the RBC Future Launch initiative of $75,000 over the next 5 years to support the Bill 7 Award Trust and scholarships for LGBTQ students facing a critical financial need.

At the event, thanks to increased support from our generous donors and RBC Future Launch, we were pleased to be able to not only increase the number of scholarships to 15 in total, but also to increase the amount of each scholarship to $3,000 each (compared to $2,500 in recent prior years).

We also would especially like to thank our corporate sponsors - IBM Canada, Manulife Financial and EY - who through their generous support enable us to hold this very special event to recognize the 15 very deserving students who were scholarship recipients.

2017 Presentation Event

Nov. 7, 2017

This year we celebrated our 30th Anniversary at the 2017 Bill 7 Award Presentation which was held on Tuesday, November 7th at 6:00 p.m. at the 519 Community Centre.

The Bill 7 Award Trust scholarship was established 30 years ago in 1987 to recognize the passing of Bill 7 by the Ontario legislature to recognize sexual orientation as protected from discrimination under the Ontario Human Rights Code.

In 2017, thanks to increased support from our generous donors, we were pleased to be able to award 12 scholarships of $2,500 each (an increase of 2 more scholarships than last year!)

We would especially like to thank our corporate sponsors - IBM Canada and EY - who through their generous support enable us to hold the event to recognize the 12 very deserving LGBTQ students who were scholarship recipients.
